Sophie Richardson Asia Advocacy Director

As Asia Advocacy director for Human Rights Watch, Sophie Richardson oversees the organization’s work on China, Japan, North Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam, among others. Dr. Richardson is widely published in Asian, American, and global media on a range of topics including domestic Chinese political reform, democratization, and human rights in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Her book on Chinese foreign policy is forthcoming from Columbia University Press. Before joining Human Rights Watch, Dr. Richardson served as a consultant to the International Crisis Group, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, and the World Bank on human rights, democratization, and governance issues in Asia. A graduate of the University of Virginia and Oberlin College, Dr. Richardson speaks Mandarin Chinese.
